Aloha {Welcome to the neighborhood}
Nested between the famous surf break and the imposing lush jungle-like mountains, lies a repository of modern architecture punctuated by breezeways,
pastel colors and “secret” courtyards.

Low rise apartment buildings from the late 50’s and 60’s with nostalgic names in vintage typography, make up for a large percentage of the buildings in Waikiki.
Many still stand almost unaltered, particularly in the Kūhio neighborhood behind the international market, a pocket of Waikiki that has remained preserved and relatively undiscovered until recent years.

Mana‘o {Idea Feeling Desire}
While major architectural landmarks by Vladimir Ossipoff and John Carl Warnecke dominate the skyline of Waikiki, its true essence can be found in the smaller residential buildings, where cultural layers and local flair collide.

The juxtaposition of humble materials with interesting tactile and visual quality delivers an effortless eclecticism. Textures and shadows play an integral role in defining the DNA and “vibe” of the neighborhood.

Taberu Nomimono Uketoru Ai Inu Loa {Eat Drink Receive}
“Find beauty not only in the thing itself but in the pattern of the shadows,
the light and dark which that thing provides.

The quality that we call beauty … must always grow from the realities of life, and our ancestors, forced to live in dark rooms, presently came to discover beauty in shadows, ultimately to guide shadows toward beauty’s ends.”

Midori Koen Monsuta {Green Garden Monster}
A neighborhood staple. Familiar, yet surprising.
A destination for some, a habit for most.
Comforting fun for all.

“With good friends…and good food on the board…we may well ask, When shall we live if not now?”
—M.F.K. Fisher, The Art of Eating
